Mental Health and Psychosocial Well being After Disasters: The Philippine Experience
The author started her talk by covering the Philippine psychosocial response to Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan). She pointed out that MHPSS was one of the government’s priorities. Implemented by International NGOs and participated mostly by local mental health workers and local NGOs, MHPSS activities was distributed and organized 2-3 months after the typhoon.
The author ended her presentation by sharing her own personal lessons from the experience: the importance of coordination, observatory concept, drug prepositioning and supply chain, engagement, disaster preparedness, and acceptable, culturally sensitive and evidence-informed psychosocial interventions.
