Connecting the last mile, the role of communications in the Great East Japan Earthquake

This report from Internews describes the role that communications played in both survival and recovery. It highlights the importance of low-tech community initiatives, such as generator powered local radio stations and (sometimes hand-written) local newspapers in reaching people in the most affected areas. The report also points out how humanitarian responders were often not aware about these information resources within the community.
