Community based social care in East and Southeast Asia

This briefing describes how demographic and societal transformations are increasing demand for care while constraining the supply of caregivers. Population ageing, migration, shrinking family size, declining co-residence and greater female workforce participation all threaten to widen gaps in the provision of social care for older people. Despite resource constraints, societies have some options in how they address those gaps. Their choices can minimize the burdens on families and older people and maximize the contribution that people in later life can make to their families, communities and societies.
